Keffiyeh, or shmagh, is what we call this square scarf traditionally used as a Middle Eastern headdress. It was - and still is - used to protect people from the sun, dust, and sand. It's also used as a makeshift water filter. The thin fabric allows it to dry quickly. The pattern is said to represent fishing nets or ears of corn and dates back to ancient Mesopotamia.
The black and white keffiyeh is associated with Palestine. However, it is work in other Middle Eastern countries as a symbol of protest for one's country or fighting for one's country.
