The keffiyeh is handmade by me in the USA of fabric from Jordan. It measures approximately 46 inches (122 cm) in length and 4 inches in width. It is one continuous piece of fabric. The material is polyester and cotton.
The keffiyeh is said to date back to the Sumerians in Mesopotamia (3100 BC) and worn by priests who were rulers and landowners as a symbol of high rank and honor. Later peasants and the nomadic Bedouin tribes adopted it as headwear to protect them from sun, wind, and sand.
The traditional center pattern depicts a fishing net while the wavy lines on the border depict olive leaves. The white/black keffiyeh with this pattern is the Palestinian colors. The white/red keffiyeh with the pattern is the Jordanian colors.
HOW KEFFIYEHS ARE MADE
Once the thread is dyed and put in place on the machine, the flying shuttle weaves the basic patterns, including the borders. Workers cut each strand loose. [This is why you will see the short threads at the end of each row.] The keffiyehs are ironed, then edges are sewn. Fringe and tassels are knotted and added by hand.
HOW TO CARE FOR IT
Most keffiyehs these days are not 100% cotton, but rather a blend of polyester that is meant to endure wear and tear. Hand wash in cold water. Hang to dry as they will dry quickly.
Please keep in mind, these keffiyehs are produced using traditional machines with humans working on the side to cut threads. The weaving of the embroidery may vary. Also, there may be small imperfections in the finished textiles.
